reactive rover IIclass homework

Hi Friends!

Here is your homework for the next four weeks. I know it's temping to read ahead, but please be sure to JUST focus on the week that we are on. This class is very dependent on creating a good solid base in order to move forward successfully. Take your time on each command/behavior, and don't move too fast. It will be worth it, I promise!

Depending on how the class flows, we may get through more each week, or we may not get through as much. It will all even out at the end of the four weeks.

Please feel free to reach out at any time if you have questions!

Week One

Hi Class,

What a great first night.  I am so proud of all of you and your pups.  They did fantastic.  Here is the Tellington Touch web site I was talking about: http://www.ttouch.com/whyTTouch.shtml
Here is a recap of our class:

Reminders:

  • Bring a mat each week.
  • Training should be done all the time, not just during class.
  • Dogs must not interact with each other; keep your dog on a short leash next to your body.
  • Reactive Rovers Two is about engaging and connecting with your dog.  It’s not about doing the exercises perfectly; it’s about focused attention from your dog.

How to connect with your dog:
  • Passive attention
  • Active attention
  • Managing the situation

LEAVE IT
  • Learning objective: Sometimes you can have it, and sometimes you can’t!

BOX WORK
  • Purpose:  To be able to work as a team with your dog in his/her comfort zone.  This is an opportunity for you to watch your dogs and for your dogs to watch you!
  • Practice things like heeling, asking for sits, downs, whip lash turns etc.
  • While working in the box click and treat often for any desirable behavior.  Do not be stingy with your treats.  Click often and anything you can.

PARALLEL GAMES
  • Gives the dog something to focus on while working near other dogs.  When they’re focused on their “job,” they’re less likely to react to the nearby dog.
  • So we can use parallel games to help desensitize reactive or easily aroused dogs to tolerate dogs running or playing nearby.

POP-UP GAME
  • This is a reminder to not just practice when you’re in training class. Be aware of your dog when you’re at home, coming to class, leaving class, etc.

OFF-SWITCH GAME

  • Purpose:  To allow the dog to reach a higher level of arousal and then reward him for calming down.  This game helps the dog learn to switch from one to the other with ease.
  • There should be a clear pattern of: get excited, settle. . . get excited, settle.   The better the dog learns this pattern, the better his coping skills will be in stressful situations.
  • Often we’re taught to deal with the dog after he has “lost it.”  We’d like to teach the dog some skills to cope with feeling aroused and to exercise self-control.  (Be proactive instead of reactive.)

PLEASE let me know if you have any questions on what we worked on!  Have a great week training!!
