Pups in Public Homework Guide
Practice your skills outside of class to build real-world success!
Week 1 – Foundations in Public
Homework:
- Practice Leave It, Watch Me, Heel, and Settle in at least 3 different places (e.g., driveway, friend's yard, calm shopping center).
- Focus on rewarding engagement and calmness in new environments.
- Try to keep sessions short but frequent (5–10 minutes).
Homework:
- Practice Under (settling under furniture), Say Hi (sit before greeting), and Back (take a few steps backward on cue) at home or with friends.
- Practice Wait at doorways or thresholds before entering rooms or outside.
- Add gentle distractions like moving objects or noise.
Homework:
- Practice Finish (returning to heel from front), Back, and Out (dropping or leaving objects).
- Try these in a more distracting environment if possible (e.g., near toys, balls, or in a quiet store).
- Work on longer Settle durations (start with 1–2 minutes) in calm spots.
Homework:
- Practice Stay with increasing distance and duration (aim for 20+ seconds, handler out of sight briefly).
- Practice Recall with distractions—call your dog away from food, toys, or people.
- Use Look at That to teach your dog to notice distractions and check back with you.
- Practice Leave It with dropped or moving food items on walks.
Homework:
- Practice a structured walk combining Heel, Watch Me, Let’s Go, and Wait cues.
- Practice Under/Place and Settle in busy or semi-busy spots (patio, café, plaza).
- Practice Say Hi + polite greeting followed by re-engagement on Let’s Go.
- Set up a simple Impulse Control Course at home or outside using Leave It, Under, Wait, and Come cues.
- Celebrate your dog’s progress and take time for calm, fun bonding!
