Helping your dog cope with storms

Dealing with a dog that’s terrified of thunderstorms can be really tough. They might show all sorts of anxious behaviors—pacing, panting, hiding, maybe even becoming destructive or incontinent. It’s heartbreaking to see them so scared.

Experts think it’s not just the noise that freaks them out. Dogs can sense approaching storms through distant thunder, changes in air pressure, even the smell of rain. So, when a storm hits, they’re already on edge.

There are ways to help them cope, though. One approach is to create positive associations with storms. Spend time with your dog during thunder, offering treats or play to distract them and build a sense of safety.

Another tactic is using pressure to calm them. Some dogs benefit from wearing snug shirts or being swaddled by their owner. It’s like a comforting hug that reduces anxiety.

Medication can also be an option for severe cases. Talk to your vet about medications that can help calm your dog’s nerves during storms, but remember they might need time to kick in, so it’s not always an instant fix.

Creating a safe space for your dog during storms can make a big difference too. A room without windows, with white noise like a TV or calming music, can drown out the scary sounds of thunder.

Lastly, be prepared. Have crates for each dog set up in a basement or safe area. Have extra water and dog food, in case your electricity goes out. Make sure you and your pet will be safe if the storm gets bad.

Living with a storm-phobic dog isn’t easy, but with patience and the right strategies, you can help them feel more secure when thunder rolls. Trust me, it’s worth it to see them finally relax, even as the storm rages outside.
